ZAMBOANGA CITY – In a heartwarming display of community effort and marine conservation, Zamboanga City Mayor John Dalipe, accompanied by City Veterinarian Dr. Mario Arriola, led the release of a rescued Hawksbill sea turtle back into its natural habitat at Sta. Cruz Island.

Mayor Dalipe expressed his gratitude towards the veterinarians who diligently cared for the turtle, ensuring its well-being before its return to the sea. He also acknowledged the vigilance of local fishermen who reported the presence of the distressed turtle near the shores of Matiti Grande Bay, on the eastern side of the city, back on September 2, 2023.

The endangered Hawksbill sea turtle had been discovered floating weakly and unable to move freely. It was subsequently brought to the attention of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and transported to the designated hatchery facility for monitoring and assessment.

Over a span of 26 days, veterinarians provided the necessary care and attention to nurse the turtle back to health. Radiology examinations revealed no signs of fishhooks or ingested fishing lines within the turtle’s system.

With its restored health and vigor, the Hawksbill sea turtle was joyfully released back into the ocean, marking a successful effort in safeguarding the city’s marine biodiversity.

This heartwarming rescue and release serve as a reminder of the importance of collective action in preserving and protecting endangered species and their natural habitats.
