Ex-Senate President Nene Pimentel dies at 85

DAVAO CITY — Former Senate President and Partido Demokratiko Pilipino- Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) founder Aquilino ‘Nene”  Pimentel Jr. , died early Sunday morning, October 20.

Nene Pimentel was 85.

Senator Koko Pimentel confirmed in a Facebook post that his father passed away.

“Our beloved Tatay Nene has joined his Creator at 5 am today Oct 20, 2019. We thank all those who have been a part of his life. We ask for prayers for the repose of Tatay Nene’s soul. Thank you to all,” Senator Koko posted

Last week Pimentel was admitted in Cagayan de Oro hospital due to lymphoma and pneumonia.

His daughter Commission on Human Rights Commissioner Gwendolyn “Gwen” Pimentel-Gana in an interview with GMA Tv said “Si tatay kasi ay may cancer pero nagkaroon siya ng pneumonia kaya siya isinugod sa ospital dahil hindi siya makahinga kaya doon siya ginamot, ang causes ay mga organ failure so ganun na nga ang nangyari.”

She asked for prayers for his father’s eternal rest., as she thanked those who prayed while his father was still at the hospital.

Aquilino Quilinging Pimentel Jr., commonly known as Nene Pimentel, was born on December 11, 1933 in Cagayan de Oro City.

Pimentel was one of the leading opposition leaders during the regime of Ferdinand Marcos from the declaration of martial law in 1972 until the People Power Revolution in 1986, which removed Marcos from power.

Pimentel served as Senate President from 2000-2001. He founded PDP-Laban, the Party of President Rodrigo Duterte.-Ezc
