Duterte does not want power to appoint barangay and SK officials

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte  does not want to appoint barangay officials.

Duterte on Tuesday said he does not want that he will be given power to appoint barangay officials even if his allies at the House of Representatives moved to postpone the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

Two weeks ago, the Congress passed House Bill 6308 which seeks to postpone the scheduled October 23 elections to May 2018.
Some members of the Senate however want the barangay elections held in October 2018.
In a televised interview with Erwin Tulfo, Duterte categorically said “Ngayon, ‘pag sinabi ninyo i-appoint na lang, sinabi ko kanina sa House of Representatives through the Speaker and — ‘Wag mong ibigay sa akin mag-appoint-appoint. Ayaw ko, ibigay ninyo sa iba (As of now, if you say let’s appoint, I told earlier the House of Representatives through the Speaker and — ‘Don’t give me the (power) to appoint-appoint. I don’t want it, give it to others)”

Citing a report that 40 percent of barangay captains are either into drugs or drugs cuddler, Duterte earlier raised the issue of appointing officers-in-charge in the barangays as the cleansing process of village chief in connection with his war on drugs is underway.

Under the consolidated bill passed by the House, incumbent barangay and SK officials will continue to function in a hold over capacity.
