ZAMBOANGA CITY (March 30) — Beneath the postcard sunsets of Fuego-Fuego Beach, the real story lies underwater—where soldiers and cadets plunged not for drills, but for trash.

On March 27, troops swapped rifles for dive masks in Barangay Tabiawan, Isabela City, hauling waste from the seabed of a rising eco-tourism spot struggling to keep pace with its own popularity.

The 1101st Infantry Brigade led the unusual mission, joined by Scout Rangers, Special Forces, civil-military teams, and ROTC cadets. While others scoured the shoreline, military divers went deeper—retrieving debris wedged in coral areas and hard-to-reach pockets that routine cleanups rarely touch.

It was equal parts environmental action and image reset: a military presence reframed not around conflict, but conservation.

Officials framed the effort as groundwork for bigger interventions, including coral “tree” planting to revive marine life in Basilan. But the cleanup also exposed a familiar tension—tourism growth outpacing environmental safeguards.

Fuego-Fuego Beach, with its park, food stalls, and views of the Quincentennial Market of Tagima, is fast becoming a local draw. Yet beneath its curated surface, waste continues to accumulate—especially underwater, where visibility is low and accountability even lower.

The city government backed the initiative, calling it a model for collaboration. Still, one cleanup—no matter how coordinated—won’t fix systemic gaps in waste management.

For now, the image is striking: uniformed men surfacing not with weapons, but with sacks of garbage. A different kind of operation—one that suggests the frontlines of protection in places like Basilan may be shifting from land to sea.
