DAVAO CITY — In an act of unyielding courage and selflessness, Nurse Jasper Alcala, who had dedicated his life to serving the community at Pagadian City Medical Center, tragically lost his life on Sunday.

He was on board an ambulance en route to Cagayan de Oro when disaster struck—a devastating accident on a treacherous downhill stretch in the town of Sultan Naga Dimaporo.

As the ambulance careened towards a deadly fall, Alcala’s immediate instinct was not to save himself but to protect the life of the patient in his care. According to police reports, Alcala held the patient firmly in his arms, shielding them with his own body as the vehicle overturned and plummeted into the cliff. While the patient survived the harrowing crash, Alcala’s act of pure bravery ultimately cost him his life.

The Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) Zamboanga Del Sur – Pagadian City Chapter expressed profound grief over his untimely passing. “With heavy hearts, we mourn the loss of Sir Jasper Alcala, a nurse whose devotion to his patients knew no bounds,” the association stated in a moving tribute. “He gave his life in the service of others, embodying the very spirit of what it means to be a nurse. His ultimate sacrifice is a testament to the courage and dedication that every nurse carries in their heart.”

Nurse Alcala’s final moments were a reflection of his unwavering commitment to care, even when faced with unimaginable peril. “Jasper was more than a healthcare professional; he was a guardian of life. His actions were not just those of a nurse, but of a hero,” the PNA continued. “In his selfless act, he displayed an extraordinary strength, choosing to save a life over his own. This is the essence of true heroism.”

The people of Pagadian, along with the nursing community, have united in honoring Alcala’s memory. His compassion, dedication, and ultimate sacrifice will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him. “His bravery will never be forgotten. His legacy will live on, not only in the lives he saved but in the inspiration he leaves behind for all who serve others,” the PNA concluded.

With deep sorrow, they stand in solidarity with his family, friends, and colleagues, pledging that his sacrifice will continue to inspire future generations of nurses and caregivers.

Rest in peace, Nurse Jasper Alcala—your heroism will never be forgotten, and your spirit will live on in every life you touched.
