DAVAO CITY (May 26)—On Monday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 off the coast of Davao Occidental.
The tectonic quake occurred at 6:48 p.m., approximately 91 kilometers southeast of Sarangani Island, with a depth of 82 kilometers.
As of posting time, no felt intensity reports were logged based on traditional accounts from residents. However, Phivolcs recorded Instrumental Intensity I in the municipalities of Malungon and Alabel in Sarangani Province.
Phivolcs clarified that instrumental intensity is measured using specialized devices that detect ground acceleration, unlike traditional felt reports that rely on human observation.
The agency said aftershocks are possible, but due to its depth and moderate magnitude, the earthquake is not expected to cause significant damage.
Phivolcs continues to monitor the situation and advises the public to stay alert and follow official updates.
