Magnitude 6.5 earthquake shakes Davao Occidental

DAVAO CITY — A magnitude 6.5 earthquake jolted Davao Occidental at 5:48 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tectonic quake struck 368 kilometers of Balut Island. It was 10 kilometers deep.

Phivolcs reported the following intensities:

Intensity II- Malungon and Glan, SARANGANI; CITY OF DAVAO

Instrumental Intensities:

Intensity II – Malungon, SARANGANI

Intensity I – Alabel, Glan and Kiamba, SARANGANI; Don Marcelino, DAVAO OCCIDENTAL;

City of Digos, DAVAO DEL SUR

Instrumental intensity, on the other hand, is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.

Aftershocks are possible, but Phivolcs said it is not expecting damage from the magnitude 6.7 earthquake
