DAVAO CITY, Philippines — On June 7, Major General Luis Rex Bergante officially assumed command of the Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) during a Change of Command Ceremony at its headquarters in Davao City. The ceremony was presided over by General Romeo S. Brawner Jr., Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
Bergante succeeds Major General Jose Ma Cuerpo II, who served as the Acting Commander of EastMinCom.
In his address, General Brawner underscored the strategic role that EastMinCom plays in maintaining peace and security in the region, known for its complex landscape of insurgency and diverse communities.
Brawner urged Bergante to leverage the extensive capabilities of Brigade Commanders under his leadership. He highlighted the critical need for professionalism and strategic foresight in tackling both internal and external security challenges. “We are at a pivotal time where strategic thinking and professional conduct are imperative to navigating the multifaceted threats we face,” Brawner remarked.
Bergante is no stranger to the Southern Mindanao region. Prior to this appointment, he commanded the 1001st Brigade, which operates in areas under EastMinCom’s jurisdiction. His tenure at the brigade is noted for its focus on combat operations against insurgent groups and fostering stronger ties with local communities.
In his inaugural address as the EastMinCom commander, Bergante emphasized the importance of genuine community engagement and post-conflict reconciliation. He stated, “Our mission goes beyond military operations. It is about building trust, aiding in development, and ensuring a lasting peace for the communities we serve.”
He expressed a strong commitment to working closely with local leaders and organizations to enhance the quality of life and security for the people in Eastern Mindanao.
Before taking command at EastMinCom, Bergante was the head of the Philippine Army’s Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), where he played a crucial role in modernizing and shaping the training programs for the Army. His leadership in TRADOC is credited with advancing the professional development of military personnel and integrating innovative training methodologies.
Bergante is a proud alumnus of the prestigious Philippine Military Academy, having graduated from the “Bigkis-Lahi” Class of 1990. He distinguished himself academically, finishing seventh in his class, reflecting his dedication and commitment to excellence from the outset of his military career.
As he steps into his new role, Bergante’s extensive experience and proven leadership are expected to bring renewed vigor and strategic direction to EastMinCom. His appointment comes at a critical juncture, as the region continues to navigate the challenges of maintaining peace and security amidst evolving threats.
