DAVAO CITY – Genelyn Lobiano mourned the loss of her husband, Jimmy Bayantong Lobiano, 42, a resident of Purok 11, Barangay Sirib, Calinan District. He was fatally shot by the police on Saturday, July 15, at around 10:40 PM, during a warrant of arrest operation for a rape case.
Jimmy Lobiano was rushed to a hospital in Calinan but was declared dead upon arrival. The incident took place after an altercation between Jimmy and Bonie Erang, 27, who allegedly resisted arrest and drew a .38 revolver.
The case is linked to the rape incident involving Architect Vlanch Marie Bragas, which occurred on May 16 and was captured on CCTV footage. The police discovered a yellow umbrella believed to have been used in the crime, prompting them to launch “Oplan Katok,” a series of visits to owners of yellow umbrellas in the Calinan area.
Genelyn Lobiano confirmed her involvement in Bragas’ case, alleging that her husband was the one who committed the crime. She disclosed that her husband had admitted to sexually assaulting a person with disabilities (PWD), which led her to file a complaint against him in December 2022. However, she expressed her distress over her husband’s inclusion in the Bragas case, stating that he had no involvement and was not acquainted with those connected to the incident.
Barangay Sirib Captain Marcelina Antogop confirmed that there had been a complaint against Lobiano in their barangay, related to the alleged sexual assault of his spouse.
Genelyn Lobiano, while acknowledging her husband’s wrongdoing, expressed her pain at his involvement in the Bragas case. She mentioned that he had returned early to their home from work.
She also denied owning a yellow umbrella, claiming that her husband had his own motorcycle for transportation.
The news team attempted to reach Joey Misa, the owner of the confiscated umbrella from a resident of Barangay Balengaing, Tugbok District, but Barangay Captain Daniel Orong denied having any resident by that name.
The recovered umbrella is now reportedly in the custody of the Calinan Police Station, although the news team did not witness its presence during their visit to the station.
Efforts were made to obtain a statement from Police Colonel Alberto Lupaz, Chief of the Davao City Police Office, but he declined to comment on the Lobiano and Bragas cases.
