DAVAO CITY – The series of “Bantay Karne” operations in Mati City, Davao Oriental, have resulted in the seizure of 290 packs of pork-based products early this week, the city government said Thursday.

Mati City information officer Ben Jason Tesiorna said the “Bantay Karne” drive was part of the city’s effort to prevent the entry of African swine fever (ASF) into the city.

Beginning Tuesday, Tesiorna said the City Veterinary Services Office (CVSO) conducted a series of inspections for illegally sold pork-based products in coordination with the City Information Office (CIO), the City Administrator’s Office, the City Health Office (CHO), and Philippine National Police (PNP).

During an inspection earlier this week at the Madang Public Market, he said authorities confiscated 200 packs of tocino weighing some 50 kilograms.

Another 90 packs of processed chorizo were also seized for violation of Republic Act 10536 otherwise known as “The Meat Inspection Code of the Philippines,” Tesiorna added.

“The products were then properly disposed at the condemnation facility of the City Slaughterhouse in Sitio Sudlon, Barangay Central,” he said.

He said inspections will continue to ensure that meat dealers and resellers abide by the meat safety code and “make the city of Mati ASF-free”. -PNA
