DAVAO CITY — Mayor Sara Duterte has asked the city council to come up with an ordinance that will set restrictions on the use of drones in the city.

Mayor Sara said there is a need to restrict the use of drones following reports that these are being used as weapons in other localities.

The mayor, however, was quick to clarify that there were no reported incidents of drones being used as weapons in Davao.

“There are areas outside Davao City that drones were being used as a weapon. We don’t want this to happen in our city that is why we want to craft an ordinance for this,” she said in an interview on Friday.

While a law is still being eyed on the use of drones, those wishing to fly drones even for event coverages need to secure permission from the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) and Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).

“Right now, drone flying is under the supervision of CAAP especially in areas near the routes of the airplane,” she said.

The mayor did not give details on how drones are being used as weapons. She said she already referred her proposal to the Committee on Public Safety and Security chaired by Councilor Ma. Belen Acosta.

She said the ordinance would be an added security for the city since people will be ensured that the drones flying in the city are safe.

“It is better if we prevent such thing to happen,” she said. -PNA
