CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (March 10) — Firefighters from across the country will converge in Misamis Occidental later this month as the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) stages the 2026 National Fire Olympics in Oroquieta City from March 24 to 26.

The national competition will gather 14 teams, representing the 13 BFP regional offices and the BFP Central Office, in a series of simulated rescue and emergency response challenges designed to test the skills and endurance of firefighters.

Romel Tradio, regional director of the BFP in Northern Mindanao, said preparations are ongoing in coordination with local government units and partner agencies to ensure the smooth staging of the event.

“We are closely coordinating with the host local government units and partner agencies to ensure that all logistical and operational requirements are in place for the safe and successful conduct of the 2026 National Fire Olympics,” Tradio said in an interview Monday.

High-intensity rescue challenges

The competition will feature several operational events that simulate real-life emergency situations, including:

  • – Life Extrication Challenge – rescuing victims trapped in vehicles or structures
  • – Rope Rescue Challenge – technical rescue operations in elevated or confined spaces
  • – Toughest Firefighter Challenge – an endurance-based event that tests strength, speed, and firefighting skills

These activities are meant to sharpen the operational readiness of firefighters while promoting best practices in rescue and disaster response.

Knowledge and advocacy events

Beyond physical competitions, the event will also include the Fire Safety Quiz Bowl, which tests participants’ knowledge of fire prevention, emergency protocols, and safety strategies.

The program will also feature the Miss National Fire Olympics pageant, highlighting leadership, advocacy, and public safety awareness among BFP personnel representing their respective regions.

Local government support

The Misamis Occidental provincial government has pledged full support for the national event.

Henry Oaminal, governor of Misamis Occidental, is coordinating with the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines to ensure security and logistical support throughout the three-day gathering, according to provincial information officer Shane Nagtalon.

Local officials said hosting the competition is expected to boost tourism and local economic activity, while showcasing Oroquieta City as a venue capable of holding major national events.

The National Fire Olympics is one of the BFP’s key activities during Fire Prevention Month, observed every March to promote public awareness and strengthen disaster preparedness across communities.
