CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (October 24) — Authorities in Misamis Oriental have confirmed an algal bloom off the coast of Tagoloan, prompting warnings against eating locally sourced shellfish.
Laboratory tests by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 10 found traces of Gymnodinium spp., a microscopic algae that can cause water discoloration and potential health risks, in the coastal waters of Barangays Gracia and Baluarte.
The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) said the bloom, first observed on October 17, remains under close watch.
PENRO advised residents to avoid harvesting or consuming shellfish from the affected areas, though fish, squid, crab, and shrimp are safe if properly cleaned and cooked.
Governor Juliette Uy also directed a full environmental assessment and rehabilitation plan for the province’s agricultural facilities, saying food safety and sustainability “must remain top priorities.”
BFAR and PENRO teams continue to monitor coastal conditions and urged the public to report any further discoloration or fish kills.
