MARAWI CITY — The National Housing Authority (NHA) will help Marawi City in the prevention of dengue in all transitory shelters where thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) are housed.

NHA’s Head of Marawi Project Management Office, Engr. Roderick Ybaṅez, said the agency have already ordered olyset nets that will be used to cover the windows and prevent mosquitos and other insects from getting inside the houses.

These nets will be provided to all transitory shelters in Marawi City by September, Ybaṅez said.

Marawi City’s Health Officer Dr. Ali Dalidig said that 277 dengue cases were recorded in Marawi City with three mortalities from January to July this year.

Of that number, 121 were recorded in July only, when the Department of Health announced that dengue is already a national epidemic.

“The mayor was alarmed and immediately ordered all the departments in the local government unit (LGU) to conduct massive clean-up all over 72 barangays dubbed as Limpyo Marawi Kontra Dengue,” Dalidig said in a press briefing of the Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM).

Aside from the massive clean-up drive, Dalidig said, the LGU has also conducted a multi-media campaign to educate residents how to prevent the virus brought by a mosquito using radio stations, two-way radio group and social media.

The City Government has also advised the schools to suspend the wearing of uniform for the children so that they could wear long pants and long-sleeve shirts.

“We also adopt the 4S strategies: Search and Destroy, Self Protection, Seek Early Consultation and Say No to Indiscriminate Fogging,” Dalidig said.
