P19.8-M allotted for students’ employment in Zamboanga City

DAVAO CITY – The city government of Zamboanga allotted P19.8 million for the implementation of the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) during the upcoming vacation.

City Social Welfare and Development Office Assistant Chief Uldarico Fabian said on Friday that the SPES will have a total of 2,321 slots this year.

Fabian said “those qualified to avail of the program are 15 to 30-year-old students enrolled during the current school year and also the out-of-school-youths who intend to continue education in the coming school year.”

“The program will be from June 19 to July 14 for the first batch of 1,222 college students, while the second batch will begin on July 17 and end Aug. 11 for 1,099 high school students,” Fabian said.

Qualified students will receive a salary of P11,379 each for a 20-day work or P568.95 a day.

Implemented jointly by the city government and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) at 60 percent and 40 percent appropriations, respectively, SPES aims to provide employment opportunities to students who want to earn money during their summer vacation. It aims to help students from low-income families to finance their education while gaining work experience.
