MANILA, Philippines —The government needs to spend P800-million to rebuild the 15 schools destroyed by the clash between the government troops and the IS-inspired Maute group in Marawi City.
There are 132 schools in Marawi which need rehabilitation but fifteen are severely damaged which needs reconstruction.
Rebuilding and rehabilitation will cost the government about P2.3-billion but as it is now, only 15 will be the priority.
Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones Wednesday said rebuilding the schools is the utmost priority after Marawi will be cleared.
The school destruction is either caused by bombs, burned or looted.
The Marawi crisis affected 16,472 Marawi children who fled for safety in various parts of the country.
The students are temporarily enrolled pending the normalcy of the area. Since the incident in Marawi is still ongoing, the affected students need temporary learning spaces, furniture and fixtures, books, and laboratory equipment.-Harold V. Pontongan/Newsline.ph
