MANILA, Philippines — The country’s flag carrier, the Philippine Airlines Friday settled its P6-billion unpaid obligation representing the air navigational charges.
The PAL, issued two checks totalling to P6 billion in favor of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA).
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) in a statement stated, the PAL, through its Vice President for Legal Affairs Clara de Castro, submitted their checks to the CAAP office in Pasay City to settle its obligations to the government.
The turnover of checks was witnessed by DOTr Undersecretary for Aviation and Airports Manuel Antonio Tamayo, Undersecretary for Legal Affairs and Procurement Reinier Paul Yebra, and Assistant Secretary for Communications Leah Quiambao.
The airline’s payment was made earlier than the December 2017 deadline.
The airline in a statement stressed “We are pleased to announce that PAL’s financial obligations to the government amounting to PhP6 billion, which were incurred since 1970s up to July 2017, have finally been settled.”
It added “The conclusion of this long-standing issue under the Duterte administration underscores our strong commitment to decisively act on matters that would greatly benefit the nation’s best interest.”
The added income for the national coffers will mean more development for the people.
On September 27, 2017 President Rodrigo Duterte asked business tycoon and PAL President Lucio Tan to pay the government his airport obligations.
