MANILA (April 16)—President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday announced the arrest of businessman Zaldy Co, who is now under detention in Prague after allegedly crossing into the Czech Republic without proper documentation.
In a statement posted on his official social media page, Marcos said Co is currently in the custody of Czech authorities following his apprehension.
“The Philippine government is now in close coordination with the Czech government to ensure that all legal processes are properly observed and to facilitate his return to the Philippines at the soonest possible time,” the President said.
Zaldy Co has long been linked to multiple legal controversies in the Philippines, including allegations involving large-scale financial irregularities and his reported connection to high-profile investigations tied to procurement anomalies and misuse of public funds. His name has surfaced in previous congressional inquiries and law enforcement operations, placing him under scrutiny for alleged involvement in questionable business dealings.
Authorities have earlier sought Co’s arrest after he reportedly left the country amid mounting legal pressure. His apprehension in Europe is seen as a significant development in the government’s effort to hold individuals accountable in connection with these cases.
The Department of Justice and other concerned agencies are expected to initiate extradition proceedings, subject to existing agreements and the judicial processes of the Czech Republic.-Editha Z Caduaya
