PCG spearheads mangrove planting to protect Surigao’s coasts

BUTUAN CITY  (September 19) – On Friday, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) sub-stations in Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur carried out a simultaneous mangrove planting initiative.

According to a statement issued on September 13, the Coast Guard Station Surigao del Norte (CGS-SDN) planted around 500 mangrove propagules from its sub-stations during a one-day planting activity in the coastal area of Barangay Lipata in Surigao City.

The substations on Siargao Island planted mangroves separately, mainly along the coasts of Dapa and Sta. Monica, in which 450 propagules were planted.

“The simultaneous activities are part of the PCG’s thrust on a proactive engagement to communities in environmental conservation efforts and community relation services,” the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said.

Alongside the mangrove planting, the PCG celebrated its 124th anniversary with the theme “Honoring Service, Commitment and Maritime Excellence.”

In the coastal neighborhood of Barangay Bucto in Bislig City, personnel from Coast Guard Station Surigao del Sur (CGS-SDS) also planted over 200 mangrove propagules on Friday.

In a separate statement, the CGS-SDS stated that the exercise sought to assist maintain and restore the coastal ecosystem in the area, enhance environmental stewardship, and emphasize the need of safeguarding natural resources for future generations.
