MANILA (November 18) – Families caring for premature babies may now breathe a little easier. PhilHealth has announced financial aid of up to P135,000 for infants born between 24 and less than 32 weeks of gestation—support that can spell the difference between overwhelming hospital bills and a fighting chance at life.

The announcement was made Monday in time for World Prematurity Day, putting a spotlight on the heavy medical and emotional load parents face when a newborn arrives too early. Extremely premature or very small babies often need weeks of specialized care, with costs piling up fast.

PhilHealth’s expanded Z Benefits package aims to lighten that burden by covering essential services in accredited hospitals, ensuring newborns receive the critical care they need in their earliest and most fragile days.

Babies delivered between 32 and less than 37 weeks may also qualify for assistance ranging from P24,000 to P71,000, depending on their condition and treatment requirements.

Expectant mothers at risk of early delivery aren’t left behind. PhilHealth is offering support worth P600 to P4,000 for complications such as preterm labor, bleeding, preeclampsia, eclampsia, and PPROM—a serious condition involving premature rupture of membranes. The package also helps cover coordinated referral and transfers to higher-level hospitals when needed.

PhilHealth added that premature babies born with congenital anomalies—including congenital heart disease or cleft lip and palate—may receive further financial assistance.

Prematurity remains a leading cause of newborn deaths worldwide. With these expanded benefits, PhilHealth hopes to give vulnerable babies a stronger shot at survival while protecting families from catastrophic medical costs.
