DAVAO CITY – On the feast of the Holy Family, Pope Francis urged families to prioritize dialogue and mutual listening, highlighting the Holy Family of Nazareth as a model for communication while warning against the disruptive influence of mobile phones on family life.

Addressing pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the weekly Angelus prayer, the pontiff reflected on the Gospel story of the young Jesus being found in the Temple after his parents’ anxious search.

“It is good when a mother does not start with a rebuke but with a question,” Pope Francis said, emphasizing Mary’s approach to Jesus. “Mary does not accuse or judge but seeks to understand her Son, who is so different, through listening.”

The Holy Father stressed the importance of mealtimes as opportunities for meaningful family dialogue, cautioning against using mobile phones during these moments.

“Never, never this,” Francis said firmly, referring to phone use at the table. “Talk, listen to each other; this dialogue nurtures you and helps you grow!”

After the Angelus, the pope extended special greetings to families connecting via media, expressing solidarity with those in conflict zones, including Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Myanmar, Sudan, and North Kivu.

Pope Francis also offered prayers for the victims and families affected by South Korea’s deadliest air disaster, which occurred Sunday. At least 177 people lost their lives when an airliner belly-landed, veered off the runway, and exploded at Muan International Airport, according to Reuters.

The pontiff’s message underscored the need for compassion, unity, and open communication to overcome challenges within families and across global communities.-With, a report from Vatican press
