DAVAO CITY (May 19) — The first documented breeding season of the endangered South Philippine Hawk-Eagle in Eastern Visayas is fueling fresh calls to protect forest habitats outside declared conservation zones after a juvenile eagle successfully took its maiden flight in Burauen.

Conservation workers and forest guards from the Philippine Eagle Foundation documented the 11-week-old raptor soaring near its nest in Barangay Mahagnao on May 17 — a milestone researchers say signals both ecological recovery and the growing importance of community-led wildlife protection.

The juvenile eagle was spotted less than 15 meters from its nest perched on a towering Tega tree, deep in a forest area outside the boundaries of the Mahagnao Volcano Natural Park.

For conservationists, that detail carries urgent implications.

The nesting site’s location beyond protected territory highlights the vulnerability of critical wildlife habitats to logging, land conversion, and human disturbance despite hosting endangered species vital to forest balance.

“These birds sit at the top of the food chain. Their survival reflects the health of the entire forest ecosystem,” said PEF biologist Tristan Senarillos.

The hawk-eagle pair was first discovered in November 2025 while researchers were monitoring Lakpue, a male Philippine Eagle in the area. Since then, conservation teams and local forest guards carried out daily nest monitoring, documenting incubation, hatching, feeding behavior, and eventually the fledgling’s first flight.

“It took 41 days of continuous observation before the egg hatched on March 2,” Senarillos said.

The successful breeding cycle is the first fully documented hawk-eagle family monitoring effort in Eastern Visayas — a breakthrough that conservationists say could help shape future protection plans for the species.

Local authorities have since moved to strengthen safeguards around the nesting site. The Protected Area Management Board approved resolutions prioritizing the hawk-eagle for long-term monitoring, expanding wildlife protection training for local stakeholders, and preparing a public naming ceremony during Eagle Week in June.

Wildlife protection notices in English and Waray have also been installed around the area to discourage disturbance and build stronger community awareness.

Environmental advocates say involving nearby communities is crucial because residents often become the first line of defense against poaching and habitat destruction.

The South Philippine Hawk-Eagle is classified as endangered under Department Administrative Order 2019-09, with habitat loss considered among its biggest threats.

Researchers are now preparing to trap and tag at least one adult eagle and the juvenile to study their territory range and movement patterns — data expected to guide a broader conservation plan for one of the country’s least documented forest raptors.

For communities around Mahagnao, the rare sighting has become more than a scientific milestone. Conservation groups say it is emerging as a symbol of how protecting forests also protects water sources, biodiversity, and long-term ecological stability for people living around them.
