DAVAO CITY  – A large boom-type crane truck lost control. It crashed into several roadside houses in Barangay Ashang, Matanao, Davao del Sur, killing two people and injuring another on Friday, February 9.

The Matanao Municipal Police identified the fatalities as Jeffrey Nacion, 39, the truck driver; Ferino Collamat, 65, a homeowner who was fatally hit when the truck plowed through his house

Nacion sustained severe injuries and fractures after the truck toppled over, while his helper, whose identity has not yet been released, suffered minor injuries and is currently recovering.

According to initial police reports, the accident was caused by mechanical trouble, which resulted in Nacion losing control of the steering wheel. The truck swerved uncontrollably, hitting multiple houses along the highway before falling sideways.

Authorities are currently investigating the incident to determine the exact cause of the mechanical failure and whether lack of maintenance or driver negligence played a role in the accident.

Following the tragedy, residents of Barangay Ashang are urging local authorities to implement stricter road safety measures. They are calling for:

  • ✅ Regular vehicle inspections for heavy trucks to prevent similar accidents
  • ✅ Speed restrictions for large vehicles passing through residential areas
  • ✅ Stronger roadside safety barriers to protect homes and pedestrians

The Matanao police coordinate with the truck’s company and local officials to assess the damage and assist affected families. Authorities remind trucking companies and drivers to prioritize vehicle maintenance and road safety protocols to avoid further loss of life
