Davao City — Davao del Norte First District Congressman Pantaleon D. Alvarez shares his opinion on the current move by some quarters calling for a revolutionary government.
Read his thought on the issue.
“Recently, there has been news about groups calling for the declaration of a Revolutionary Government (RevGov). The aim of this RevGov call is far from clear. Moreover, this is not the time for such advocacy. It is downright irresponsible especially given the situation we find ourselves in.
The world is presently in the midst of a pandemic. The Philippines was not spared. Our GDP has plunged and we are in a recession. Unemployment numbers have increased. And this is just the beginning. Beyond numbers and statistics, the human toll – of these events – is grave and deep.
People are sick, desperate, and grieving the loss of loved ones. Many are afraid, hungry, and rightly feel abandoned.
Businesses have closed down and Filipinos – both here and abroad – lost their jobs. This is a cycle that is continuously being repeated and we find ourselves spiraling down towards the abyss. These are the perils we have to confront.
How does the call for RevGov help solve these problems? Well, let’s be blunt and truthful here: it doesn’t.
Worst of all, it shows the disconnect, insensitivity, and lack of empathy for those who are calling for such a drastic move while many of our countrymen are suffering.
It is time for us to set our priorities clearly.
Together, with the government (both national and local) and the private sector working hand in hand, our frontliners holding the line, and with the assistance and cooperation from all Filipinos, we have to:
(1.) Contain and control this public health crisis, (2.) Extend assistance to the poor and marginalized hardest hit, (3.) Jumpstart the economy, (4.) Help businesses reopen, and (5.) Bring our people back to work.
Let us act responsibly. Pushing for RevGov, at this time, does not help achieve those objectives.” Newsline.ph
