SURIGAO CITY (February 3) — The municipal government of Del Carmen, Siargao Island has unveiled its Island Escapade tourism program, inviting visitors to explore the town’s iconic lagoons, beaches, and resilient island communities.
The program highlights top destinations such as Sugba Lagoon, Pamumuan Beach, and the islands of Kawhagan and Halian, offering tourists a mix of nature, adventure, and community immersion.
“The Island Escapade is a community-managed tour that brings visitors into the heart of our pristine lagoons and vibrant island communities,” the LGU said in a statement.
According to Lanie Lipio, municipal tourism officer, residents themselves lead tours and activities, ensuring that tourism benefits local families directly. “People’s organizations in our tourism destinations work hand-in-hand with local officials to facilitate visitor access and manage the sites responsibly,” Lipio said.
Among the highlights is Halian Island, home to nearly 400 families and also called “Turtle Island” for its sea turtle nesting grounds. The island is a recognized marine sanctuary and offers top diving spots. Lipio noted that despite its flat terrain, Halian recorded zero casualties during super typhoon Odette in 2021, reflecting the community’s resilience.
The program offers three-day packages covering food, accommodation, transportation, and activities, giving tourists a chance to experience island life firsthand—from diving and beach adventures to cultural exchanges with local communities.
“Visiting tourists may proceed to the town’s tourism office to inquire about the program,” Lipio added.
The Island Escapade is part of Del Carmen’s strategy to promote sustainable tourism that preserves natural sites while empowering communities to share their culture and environment with the world.
