Son hacks parents in Davao City; Father dead, mother injured

DAVAO CITY – A 71-year-old man was killed, and his 58-year-old wife was injured after being attacked by their son in Purok 2, New Masbate, Barangay Inayangan, Calinan District, Davao City, on the morning of January 3.

The deceased, identified as Ernesto Silgas Bato, was fatally hacked while chopping wood outside their home. His son, Jickie, 33, suddenly arrived carrying a machete and attacked him without any apparent reason, striking him on the right shoulder and upper arm, according to a report from Calinan Police Station 10.

After attacking his father, the suspect entered the house and hacked his mother, Elizabeth Pancho Bato, wounding her on the head.

The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended during a hot pursuit operation by the Calinan police. He is now in custody at Calinan Police Station and will face Parricide and Frustrated Parricide charges.

Meanwhile, the mother was rushed to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC), where she is receiving treatment for her injuries.

Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the brutal attack. Police have urged the public to remain calm as they continue to gather more information to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.

This tragic case highlights the importance of addressing mental health and familial conflicts, as incidents like this can leave devastating consequences for families and communities.
