Subic’s Customs Bureau confiscates P93M smuggled cigarettes declared as led lights

DAVAO CITY —- The Bureau of Customs’ (BOC) in the district port of Subic unraveled another covered declaration of a shipment which turned out to be boxes of smuggled cigarettes amounting to more or less P93-million.

In a press statement, the BOC stated that shipments came into the country and were declared as LED lights. But during the X-ray and physical examination of the containers it was discovered that the three (3) 40-foot containers were filled with various smuggled cigarettes.

Subic District Collector Maritess T. Martin issued a warrant of seizure and detention (WSD) while the consignee of the shipment is now subject to further investigation for the possible violation of National Tobacco Administration (NTA) Board Resolution No. 079-2005, NTA Memorandum Circular No. 03, Series of 2004, in relation to sec. 1113 (f) of RA 10863 otherwise known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA).

Inventory proceedings are currently being done to ascertain the volume and amount of the shipments.

Martin in the statement assured the public that the Port shall remain committed to its mandate of border protection in line with the directive and guidance of Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo B. Guerrero.-JAP/Newsline
