Sugar shortage causes insufficient softdrinks production

DAVAO CITY — The softdrinks companies pointed the shortage of premium grade sugar caused production shortage.

The Newsline Philippines was furnished a copy of the one-page statement signed by a certain Rommin Diaz, leading softdrinks bottlers in the Philippines in a joint statement issued Tuesday afternoon stating “We confirm our industry is facing shortage of Premium Refined Sugar-a kay ingredient in many of our products.’

The Coca-cola Beverages Philippines, Inc, Pepsi Cola Products Philippines , Inc and ARC Refreshments Corporation, in a joint statement explained “We are working closely with other stakeholders of the industry and the government to address the situation.”

The companies informed their consumers “We thank our customers and the public for their continued support to out products and for their understanding, the joint statement added.

But as early as October  27, 2021, the CNBC news reported  that Coca-Cola Chief Executive Officer (CEO) James Quincey revealed that the softdrinks company expected the sporadic shortage of their products  in 2022.

The same report, stated that Coke, like other food and beverage companies, they were undergoing problem with supply and the high cost of production.

During the last two weeks, supplies of softdrinks have slow down which triggered high prices.

The usual 8oz which previously had P8 suggested retail price is now pegged at P12 but the retailers are selling it at P18.

Not only that, the said product is no longer available in bottled by in a plastic bottle.

Here in the city, softdrinks distributors have complained on the limited stocks delivered to them leaving their clients strive to get allocation.-Editha Z. Caduaya
