DAVAO CITY — Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr. promptly replaced the head of the Davao Prison and Penal Colony after a prisoner escaped on September 13, despite being previously recaptured.

In a statement released by BuCor on Tuesday, September 19, Catapang explained that he relieved former superintendent Rufino Martin because he had long failed to report to BuCor that a person deprived of liberty (PDL), identified as Jundee Caño, had escaped from the minimum security compound.

Caño was apprehended by the Damulog Municipal Police Station in Bukidnon province on September 17. On the same day, Martin sent his report regarding the incident.

According to Catapang, such events within BuCor and prisons nationwide should be immediately reported to his office.

Catapang did not disclose the name of Martin’s replacement.
