Online voter registration for passport holders eyed-ComelecPosted on
DAVAO CITY — The Commission on Elections plans to allow online voter registration or “non-appearance” for passport holders.
Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said, they are studying the possibility of allowing Filipinos abroad and in the country to register online, in coordination with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
In her Twitter account, Guanzon said this will be possible if the Comelec can seal the partnership with the DFA.
“Verification of identity can be done using biometrics data of @dfarecords,” the poll body official added.
Sharing of biometrics and data among two agencies can lead to online voters registration which can be availed by all Filipinos here and abroad.
As it is now, Comelec is open for voter registration but one must go to the office, but if the plan will be realized, online voter registration can happen.
The voter registration resumed nationwide except for areas under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) or modified ECQ.
The nationwide voter registration period started on January 20, 2020. It will run until September 30, 2021, in preparation for the May 2022 elections.-Newsline.ph
