Zamboanga City resumes ‘Wow Sardinas’ tradition following 3-Year pandemic hiatus

ZAMBOANGA CITY – In a heartwarming revival of a beloved tradition, thousands of eager participants gathered along the picturesque kilometer-long expanse of R.T. Lim Boulevard on Sunday, October 8, to partake in sardines, crackers, and water. Mayor John Dalipe, District II Congressman and Majority Leader Mannix Dalipe, along with other prominent city, military, and police officials, joined in the festivities during the grand “Wow Sardinas” boodle fight.

This vibrant celebration marks the triumphant return of the cherished sardine-eating spectacle, which had been put on hold for three long years due to the disruptive impact of the global pandemic. The city government, in collaboration with the City Tourism Office, JCI Zambooanga, and various other agencies and organizations, orchestrated this resplendent event.

The resumption of this culinary extravaganza was made possible thanks to the active participation of several sardine companies. The event unfolded immediately after the conclusion of the renowned Regatta de Zamboanga, the traditional sailboat race that graced the local waters.

Zamboanga City proudly boasts its title as the Sardines Capital, serving as the home to a staggering dozen canning factories. The return of the “Wow Sardinas” celebration has rekindled the city’s fervent connection to this beloved industry and its delectable offerings.

The last time the city indulged in this sardine feasting spectacle was in 2019. Regrettably, the tradition was temporarily halted, much to the dismay of its enthusiasts, due to the stringent restrictions necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the echoes of laughter and the aroma of sardines filled the air once more, Zamboanga City demonstrated its resilience and vibrant spirit, reclaiming its cherished tradition in the face of adversity.
