2 dead sperm whales found in Siargao Island in ten days

DAVAO CITY — Two dead sperm whales were found in two different areas in Siargao Island during the last ten days.

The latest was on Thursday, April 25, in the waters of Paasaw, Purok 2, Barangay Sta. Fe, in the town of General Luna on Siargao Island.

On April 16, the Coast Guard Sub-station General Luna also reported the retrieval operation of a dead sperm whale at Magpupungko Rock Pools, Barangay Pilaring, Municipality of Pilar, Siargao Island.

The Coast Guard guard Siargao stations posted the photos of the incidents on their social media account.

Both were already in an advanced state of decomposition when found.

The remains of the dead whale in Pilar town was buried in the landfill area in the Municipality of Pilar while the General Luna Whale was buried in a vacant lot near the shore.

In both cases, personnel of the coast guard and personnel from the local government pulled the dead whale through a backhoe to the shore.

In the past cases, Marine biologist cited two causes of whales death it is either ship strikes and or entanglements in fishing gear but in some cases plastics were found inside their intestines.

The coast guard however did not mention any details about the death of the sperm whales.
