Gun ban violations surge in Davao City

DAVAO CITY – The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) has apprehended numerous individuals for violations of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) gun ban and illegal possession of firearms as a result of police operations in the city.

According to PCapt. Hazel Tuazon, spokesperson for DCPO, the police have intensified their efforts to enforce the gun ban and prevent the illegal possession of firearms, especially in the lead-up to the upcoming elections. She emphasized the importance of constant communication and coordination between local authorities and barangay councils to proactively address any issues related to election-related concerns within their areas of responsibility.

During the period from August 28 to September 20, 2023, the DCPO reported the following statistics:

Violations of Gun Ban:

  • Number of Operations Conducted: 10
  • Number of Persons/Violators Arrested: 9
  • Number of Firearms Recovered/Confiscated: 11
  • Deaths During Police Operations: 6

Other Deadly Weapons:

  • Deadly Weapons Confiscated: 20
  • Number of Persons/Violators Arrested: 8

Those arrested for violations of the gun ban and illegal possession of firearms now face legal charges.

Tuazon stressed the importance of community members promptly reporting any observed violations to the police so that appropriate action can be taken to maintain order and security in their respective barangays or areas. She reiterated the significance of ongoing coordination and cooperation between the community and the police to ensure the city’s continued safety and peace.

The Election Gun Ban, which commenced on August 28, is set to conclude on November 29, 2023.
