DAVAO CITY — Five flying fox hunters were arrested in a joint operation led by the Environment officials in Barangay Wines, Baguio District the other day.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources XI and City Environment Office in collaboration with Baguio Police Station and PNP Maritime personnel apprehended five individuals who were caught in the act of hunting and possessing large flying foxes, a species protected under Philippine law.
The DENR Davao Region stated that the operation was conducted after an informant tipped off about the illegal activities in the areas of Wines and Gumalang.
The suspects are now detained at the Baguio District Police Station while the evidence collected under the custody of DENR-CENRO Davao.
DENR shall cause the filing of charges against the suspects for violating Section 27 of Republic Act 9147, otherwise known as the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act. This legislation strictly prohibits the hunting and possession of wildlife without proper authorization.
The DENR said they will enforce the environmental laws and safeguard the country’s rich biodiversity. The Large Flying Fox, known for its significant role in seed dispersal and pollination, is vital to maintaining ecological balance.
The environment agency also called on the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that threaten wildlife to ensure that the natural heritage of the Philippines is preserved for future generations.
