DAVAO CITY (July 10) — On July 9, 2025, the children of Balay Dangupan welcomed the Rodrigo Duterte Academic Building—a new symbol of care, built through the support of loyal backers of former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

Acting Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte and Acting Vice Mayor Rodrigo “Rigo” Duterte II led the inauguration, paying tribute to their father’s lifelong commitment to child welfare.

Construction began in March 2024 on the former president’s birthday and was completed a year later, honoring a legacy rooted in protecting vulnerable children.

Addressing the residents, Mayor Baste urged them to carry on Duterte’s vision: “Let us not stop just because he is no longer with us. It is our duty to continue what PRRD started—not just for ourselves, but for the country,” he said. “Laban lang! Fight for your country.”

He also offered a personal pledge: “While you are not with your parents, I will stand as your father. Go to school, and don’t worry—I will send you.”

For Vice Mayor Rigo Duterte, the event was deeply moving. “This is a very personal ceremony. Tatay Digong spearheaded this project, and thanks to everyone’s hard work, this building now stands as a symbol of his enduring commitment to education and child welfare,” he shared.

Julie Dayaday, head of the City Social Welfare and Development Office, expressed heartfelt thanks: “From the start, President Duterte was here supporting the children. His legacy will always be remembered,” she said, holding back tears.

Since its founding, Balay Dangupan has transformed countless lives, with many former residents now professionals and some working abroad. It remains a safe haven for children who have faced trauma and loss—a place where second chances begin.

The ribbon-cutting gathered local officials, child advocates, community leaders, and Duterte supporters—united in giving children not just a home, but a hopeful future.
