TALACOGON, Agusan del Sur (June 25) — The streets of this quiet town filled with mourners on Wednesday as family, friends, teammates, and community members gathered to say their final goodbye to Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia, the promising young athlete whose sudden death has left a province grieving and searching for answers.
The 18-year-old Ateneo de Manila University basketball rookie was laid to rest at Talacogon Memorial Park, more than two weeks after he drowned during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora. Teammate Divine Adili also died in the incident.
For many in Agusan del Sur, the funeral was not only a farewell to a gifted athlete but also a collective expression of loss for a young life cut short just as his dreams were beginning to unfold.
Thousands lined the streets as the funeral procession passed through the hometown that had proudly watched Bobet rise from a local basketball standout to a member of one of the country’s most prestigious collegiate basketball programs.
At a wake before the burial, his mother, Rovelyn Baterbonia, thanked relatives, friends, and supporters who stood by the family throughout their ordeal.
“Your love, compassion, and solidarity have brought comfort and strength to our family as we mourn the loss of a beloved son whose life touched so many,” she said.
A Dream Interrupted
Bobet’s story resonated far beyond the basketball court.
For many young people in Agusan del Sur, he embodied the possibility that talent, hard work, and determination could open doors beyond their hometown. His recruitment to Ateneo represented not only personal achievement but also a source of pride for a province that rarely sees its athletes reach the national spotlight.
Recognizing his achievements and influence, the provincial government posthumously conferred upon him the Datu Lipus Makapandong Award, one of Agusan del Sur’s highest recognitions.
Provincial officials said Bobet’s passion, excellence, and journey would continue to inspire future generations of Agusanons. Yet the honor came amid profound grief. The celebration of his accomplishments was inseparable from the painful reality that a future filled with promise had been abruptly cut short.

The evening before the burial, hundreds gathered at the Talacogon Municipal Gymnasium for a final Mass offered for the young athlete.
During the service, Prosperidad Bishop Ruben Labajo acknowledged the questions that continue to surround the tragedy and joined calls for truth and clarity.
“Let us pray that the truth will finally prevail and be known to everyone. Let us continue to ask and seek the truth together with prayer,” the bishop said.
His message reflected a growing sentiment among family members, friends, and supporters who continue to seek a full understanding of the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Baterbonia and Adili.
While urging people to pursue the truth, Labajo also appealed for calm and faith amid grief.
“No one else can comfort us but God. Nothing can be resolved because of our anger and resentment,” he said.
The bishop described Bobet as an inspiration whose influence extended beyond sports and whose life touched many people despite his young age.
Beyond One Tragedy
The deaths of Baterbonia and Adili have sparked a broader conversation about safety, accountability, and duty of care in activities involving student-athletes.
Team-building activities are intended to strengthen trust, discipline, and camaraderie.
