DAPITAN CITY – The local government of Dapitan City commemorated the arrival of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal on July 17, 1892. Last year, the re-enactment of Rizal’s arrival in Dapitan through “Revisitamos Dapitan” shed light on Rizal’s life during his stay in the city, allowing the residents to gain a deeper understanding of his experiences.
According to Emmanuel Calairo, Chairman of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, Dr. Jose Rizal’s distinction as our national hero lies in his non-violent struggle. Through his literary works, such as “Noli Me Tangere,” “El Filibusterismo,” and “Successos delas Islas Filipinas,” Rizal addressed the problems and challenges faced by the country during that time. He demonstrated that even before the arrival of the Spaniards in the Philippines, our civilization already existed.
Starting from the Punto del Desembarco de Rizal, where the monument stands in Barangay Sta. Cruz as a symbol of his arrival, Rizal walked through the darkness of the night, illuminated only by the lantern carried by former Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko” Domagoso, along with the Civil Guards, on his way to the city plaza.
The lantern carried by Captain Delgras became a source of light in their dimly lit path, symbolizing the events that transpired during that historical moment.
The residents also participated by carrying their own lanterns, paying homage to Rizal’s walk.
Mayor Seth Frederick Jalosjos stated that Rizal’s exile in Dapitan represents his tenacity, intellect, and unwavering dedication to the Filipino people. It showcases his commitment to effect positive change and establish the foundation for a strong and united nation. Understanding Rizal’s exile in Dapitan allows us to appreciate his journey, learn from his teachings, and continue his fight for a just and progressive Philippines.
Through “Revisitamos Dapitan 1892,” Mayor Jalosjos aims to showcase not only to the people of Dapitan but also to the visitors of the city the rich heritage and culture left by our national hero during his four-year stay in the area.
