DAVAO CITY — The national highway of Km. 74 in Mawab town Davao de Oro is now passable to all types of vehicles, according to a Newsline source who is manning the area.

Mawab town Mayor Ruperto Gonzaga Jr, confirmed to newsline “It is passable now after our assessment last night.’

This means only for two-way traffic, only one lane is for incoming and another lane is for outgoing as the  two-lane damaged portion is still not passable.

Gonzaga said the decision to open the two lanes was an offshoot of their assessment and after a dry-run was held.

On February 4, the Davao de Oro provincial government, the Department of Public Works and Highways Davao de Oro engineering district along with other national government agencies and the 1001st Infantry Battalion signed a joint resolution passed a joint resolution Sunday night to implement the temporary road closure due to the imminent risks it may cause to the general public.

The temporary road closure took effect on February 5, paving the way for the repair of the road and clearing the soil along the hills of the national highway.

The DPWH earlier said the series of earthquakes and landslides due to inclement weather conditions past weeks have added pressure to the soil resulting in scouring and the cement collapsing, resulting in cracks along the highway.

The series of calamities has caused millions of losses in agricultural products coming in and out of Southern Mindanao to the National Capital region.

The Mawab national highway is the main road leading to regions 9, 10, and 13 and its neighboring provinces where goods from Manila to Southern Mindanao and vice versa are being transported by land.
