Drug-positive police officer faces charges after shooting rampage in Davao del Sur

December 31, 2024 by Paul Palacio

DAVAO CITY – Laboratory results from the Regional Forensic Unit XI confirmed that PCpl Alfred Dawatan Sabas, the police officer responsible for shooting his two colleagues at a boundary checkpoint in Magsaysay, Davao Del Sur, as well as the shooting deaths of a bus passenger and a security guard, tested positive for illegal drugs.

Sabas has been charged with double frustrated murder by the Davao Del Sur Provincial Prosecutor. Additional criminal charges for the deaths of the bus passenger and the security guard are expected to be filed in Cotabato Province.

The incident occurred on December 28, 2024, at around 2:30 a.m., at the regional boundary checkpoint in Barangay Opon, Magsaysay, Davao Del Sur. Sabas, who was assigned to Police Station 7 in General Santos City, first shot and killed a bus passenger before turning his weapon on his colleagues.

Police Regional Office XI director Brigadier General Leon Victor Rosete, Regional Director of PRO-XI, commended the bravery of the two wounded officers, PCol Renante Cabico, OIC of DRDO; PCol Joseph Fajardo Jr., Force Commander of RMFB 11; and PLtCol Jenette Garcia, Deputy Chief of RPRMD, who were awarded the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting (PNP Wounded Medal).

“Their bravery and unwavering dedication to duty, even in the face of great danger, deserve the highest recognition. These officers inspired us all, reminding us of the sacrifices made by those who wear the uniform to protect our communities,” Rosete said.

In addition to the medals, the officers received cash assistance of ₱100,000 from the Philippine National Police and ₱50,000 each from Rosete as recognition for their service and courage.

Authorities assured that support for the wounded policemen will continue as they recover, and justice will be pursued for the victims of the tragic incident.
