COTABATO CITY, Philippines– More than 4,000 families have been affected by floods in the municipality of Kabuntalan in Maguindanao.
On Monday, June 5 the school year 2017-2018 opens but all public schools are still underwater.
The heavy downpour during the last six days affected the 17 villages which prompted the local government to declare the town under the state of calamity.
Kabuntalan is a 6th class municipality with a population on 17,276 as of the 2015 census, it is one of the 15 town surrounding Liguasan Marsh and a known wetland.
Knee-deep floodwater affected the town hall grounds and other government buildings.
Akad Mamongon, a resident in Barangay Lower Taviran said the floods had brought the misery especially now that they observe the fasting month of Ramadhan.
“We have nowhere to go, we prefer to stay because we are used to floods. The water will recede in the coming days anyway,” he said in the vernacular.
Disaster officials have yet to assess the damages to agricultural products.
On Thursday, the Sangguniang Bayan, in a special session, passed Resolution No. 140 declaring state of calamity so the local government can use its calamity fund, according to Mayor Salaban Diocolano.
The local government has provide food packs and relief goods to the affected residents,
