MANILA (August 16) – E-wallet giants GCash and Maya have assured the public they will comply with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) directive to cut links to online gambling platforms.
In a statement Thursday, GCash said it will fully support the BSP’s proactive move to remove links and icons connecting payment apps to gambling sites. “We share the BSP’s commitment to ensuring that digital financial services are used responsibly and in ways that protect the welfare of Filipinos. Once we receive the official directive, we will immediately enforce the necessary changes to ensure compliance and safeguard our users,” the company said.
During the Senate Committee on Games and Amusement hearing the same day, BSP Deputy Governor Mamerto Tangonan said the central bank has ordered e-wallet providers to unlink from gambling platforms within 48 hours.
In a separate statement, Maya said it is ready to comply with the BSP’s guidance. “The update will be implemented in line with the BSP’s guidance. We assure customers that their accounts and transactions remain secure and fully operational. We remain focused on serving our customers while fully complying with regulatory requirements,” it said.
The BSP order is part of broader efforts to ensure financial platforms are not used for activities that may harm the public’s welfare.
