Grenade blast leaves female teacher dead

PIKIT, NORTH COTABATO – A public school teacher died in a grenade explosion inside her house in Barangay Ginatilan, this municipality at 2 a.m. on Thursday, June 15.

Pikit Municipal police chief Lt. Col. John Calinga identified the victim as Marichu Valle Cabañog, 42, a teacher at this municipality’s Balong Elementary School.

Police report disclosed that the grenade exploded inside the house of Cabañog who instantly died for sustaining serious physical injuries in the lower part of her body.

Investigators found a grenade safety lever inside the house of Cabañog while the safety pin was discovered outside her bedroom’s window.

“We are still trying to determine if the grenade was thrown toward the house,” Calinga said.

Calinga said that according to their investigation “the victim has no known enemy.”

On May 26, this year, Joel Reformado, 36, a teacher of Damalasak Elementary School, was aboard a motorcycle with fellow teacher Elton John Lapined, 37, when they were waylaid by unidentified gunmen in front of Manaulanan Elementary School, also of this municipality.

Reformado died instantly while Lapined was injured and brought to a nearby hospital.
