DAVAO CITY — A couple was found dead while dozens were hurt when the magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit struck Sarangani, Davao Occidental on November 17, 2023, at 4:14 PM local time. The seismic event occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicenter located at 05.37°N, 125.15°E, approximately 30 kilometers south-southwest of Sarangani.

The earthquake, felt across a wide area, has prompted concerns regarding potential damage and aftershocks. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported varying intensities across the affected regions.

Residents in areas experiencing higher intensity levels reported strong shaking, while those in lower intensity areas felt moderate to light tremors. As of now, there are no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage, but authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

Local government units in the affected regions have activated emergency response protocols, and residents are advised to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines. Aftershocks are expected, and the possibility of structural damage to buildings and infrastructure is being assessed.
