DAVAO CITY, Philippines — In a dedicated effort to preserve the remaining forest and endangered wildlife of the Philippines’ King of Mountains, Mt. Apo Natural Park (MANP) officially commenced its annual Off Season on June 1, 2024. This conservation period is set to end on August 31, 2024.
The Off Season is a crucial time for the sacred mountain, during which all trekking and camping activities are prohibited across all opened trails in the natural park. This hiatus allows the ecosystem to recuperate and provides wildlife the freedom to roam their natural habitats without human interference. The initiative underscores the commitment to the aesthetic, economic, cultural, and ecological significance of Mt. Apo.
Considering the ongoing efforts to declare Mt. Apo as a UNESCO Global Geopark, the annual closure plays a vital role in ensuring the protection and conservation of this protected area. The holistic development of MANP is at the forefront of these efforts, promoting sustainable environmental practices and safeguarding biodiversity.
The practice of closing Mt. Apo from June to August began in 2022, following the MANP-PAMB En Banc Resolution No. 06, series of 2021. This resolution was passed by the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) with the objective of promoting the comprehensive development and preservation of the park.
During this period, the management team focuses on various conservation activities, such as habitat restoration, species monitoring, and implementing anti-poaching measures. These efforts are essential in maintaining the health of the park’s ecosystems and ensuring the survival of its diverse wildlife.
“By prohibiting human activities during these three months, we give Mt. Apo the necessary time to recover from the impact of tourism and other anthropogenic pressures,” said a spokesperson for MANP. “This not only helps in the rejuvenation of the forest but also allows the wildlife to thrive in their natural environment.”
The closure is also a time for reflection and planning for the future. The management team evaluates the effectiveness of current conservation strategies and develops new approaches to enhance the park’s sustainability. Community involvement is also a significant aspect, with local residents and stakeholders being educated on the importance of protecting Mt. Apo.
Visitors and nature enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the reopening of Mt. Apo in September, with hopes of witnessing a more majestic and healthier environment. The annual closure has proven to be an effective measure in maintaining the balance between tourism and conservation, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the beauty and biodiversity of the Philippines’ highest peak.
As the Off Season progresses, updates and reports on the park’s condition and wildlife sightings will be shared with the public, fostering a greater appreciation for the efforts being made to protect Mt. Apo.
“We hope to see a more majestic and healthier MANP in the next few months,” the spokesperson added. “See you in September, Mount Apo!”
