Phivolcs: Bogo Bay Fault triggered 6.9 Cebu quake

MANILA (October 5) – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed that the onland extension of the newly named Bogo Bay Fault caused the magnitude 6.9 offshore Cebu earthquake on September 30.

In Sitio Looc, Barangay Nailon, Bogo City, the Phivolcs team found fault scarps, cracks, and pressure mounds within a 2-meter-wide deformation zone. Initial mapping showed around 200 meters of surface rupture, while drone surveys indicate the fault may stretch up to 1.5 kilometers with signs of right-lateral movement. Field verification is ongoing.

As of 8 p.m. Friday, Phivolcs has recorded 4,581 aftershocks, ranging from magnitude 1 to 5.1. Of these, 883 were located and 22 were felt. The public is advised to remain alert for strong aftershocks, secure their homes, know evacuation routes, and follow only official updates.
