MANILA (December 8) — Police have arrested 106 suspects in a nationwide sweep against cybercrimes, the Philippine National Police (PNP) announced, warning the public to stay vigilant as online scams typically surge during the Christmas season.
Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the suspects were linked to offenses ranging from digital fraud to online sexual exploitation, and were caught through sting operations, warrant service, and a rescue mission.
The operations also led to the rescue of 18 victims and 15 children in conflict with the law, underscoring how online crimes increasingly target — and exploit — vulnerable individuals.
“We continue to strengthen our drive against cybercrimes not only because it is our mandate, but because millions of Filipinos depend on us to protect them in the digital space,” Nartatez said.
Cybercrime cases spike; 188 cases filed
In November alone, the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) filed 188 cases — 120 through regular filing and 68 via inquest. The ACG also implemented 97 cyber warrants, performed 68 digital forensic examinations, and conducted 2,365 cyber patrols.
Police said their efforts helped secure the conviction of 22 individuals involved in various online fraud schemes and exploitation cases.
Holiday scam surge expected
With online scams rising sharply during the holidays, Nartatez urged the public to be extra careful when shopping, responding to unsolicited messages, or entering digital transactions.
Cybercriminals, he warned, “take advantage of the Christmas rush” by crafting fake promos, phishing messages, bogus job offers, and fraudulent e-commerce deals.
“Think twice before clicking or sharing personal information, especially when dealing with suspicious offers,” Nartatez said.
