MANILA (September 22) – The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) has strongly denounced the violence and harassment directed at journalists covering protest actions on Sunday, September 21.
During demonstrations, several individuals were injured, including broadcast journalist Manny Vargas, who was struck by a projectile while performing his duty. PTFOMS stressed that the incident highlights the urgent need to safeguard members of the press, who play a vital role in delivering accurate and timely information to the public.
In a statement, the National Press Club of the Philippines underscored that any attack on media workers—whether intentional or accidental—undermines press freedom and the public’s right to be informed. PTFOMS echoed this, emphasizing that journalist safety is non-negotiable and essential to maintaining a free and transparent flow of information.
Meanwhile, News 5 reporter Gary de Leon was harassed while conducting a live broadcast at a protest rally in Mendiola, Manila. De Leon was shouted at, blocked, and jostled by a group of demonstrators, forcing him to relocate to a safer area to continue his coverage.
PTFOMS Executive Director Jose Torres Jr. condemned the incident, saying:
“No journalist should ever be subjected to intimidation, threats, or obstruction while performing their duty to deliver truthful and timely information to the public.”
Torres commended police officers at the scene for their quick action in ensuring De Leon’s safety and preventing further escalation. He also reaffirmed the Task Force’s commitment, alongside the PNP Media Vanguards, to remain vigilant in addressing threats against media workers.
“We call on all sectors to respect the vital role of the media and to work together in ensuring a safe environment for journalists,” Torres said.
