SAMAL ISLAND, Philippines — Samal Island has been making significant progress toward a greener and more sustainable future since the implementation of City Ordinance 2018-293, which took effect in 2021. This ordinance bans single-use plastics, focusing primarily on business establishments but encouraging everyone — locals and tourists alike — to play an active role in keeping the island plastic-free.

Businesses on the island have embraced the shift, moving away from single-use plastics. However, the effort doesn’t end with them. Locals and visitors are encouraged to bring reusable bags, tumblers, and containers when shopping, dining, or simply enjoying the natural beauty of Samal. Every small action contributes to maintaining the island’s pristine environment.

“Whether you’re enjoying the market, dining at local restaurants, or relaxing on our beautiful beaches, your choices matter,” said a local environmental advocate. “We all need to work together to protect our beaches, marine life, and the unique charm of this paradise.”

Mayor Al David Uy has been pushing for a green island, saying the garden of Samal is the greeneries of the and the sea.

The island’s ongoing efforts aim to preserve its breathtaking landscapes and marine ecosystems, ensuring that Samal remains an eco-friendly haven for future generations. As the community continues to embrace sustainability, locals are also spreading the word, inspiring others to join the movement.

Samal Island is building a greener future, and with everyone’s continued participation, it can become a model for plastic-free living in the region.
