SUBIC BAY – Triathatlete John De Deus Alcala, better known as John “Exotic” Alcala, emerged victorious as the overall finisher in the individual male category at the recently concluded Century Tuna Ironman 70.3 event held in Subic Bay.

Alcala claimed the top spot in the male 25-29 age category.

The race proved to be a grueling challenge for Alcala, who faced adverse weather conditions throughout the competition. Despite the unfavorable circumstances, Alcala’s performance in Subic Bay surpassed even his previous race in Puerto Princesa, as he implemented a more rigorous training regimen to prepare himself.

Reflecting on the race, Alcala shared his insights on the venue:

“Between Palawan and Subic, I prefer Palawan because I had more adequate training there. In Subic, many participants did not finish the race due to the extremely choppy waters during the swim course. Perhaps they got scared. Moreover, the bike course was challenging with heavy rain, side winds, and headwinds, making the roads slippery. Indeed, it wouldn’t be called an Ironman race if the route wasn’t challenging.”

Alcala’s remarkable performance saw him complete the demanding 1.9-kilometer swim course in just 39 minutes and 20 seconds. He conquered the arduous 90-kilometer bike course in two hours, 33 minutes, and 17 seconds, and showcased his endurance during the 21-kilometer run course, crossing the finish line in one hour, 27 minutes, and two seconds. In total, Alcala’s impressive feat earned him a combined time of four hours, 43 minutes, and 35 seconds.

Despite his victory, Alcala humbly acknowledged the contributions of his fellow athletes and shared his gratitude for their support.

“Start with smaller races first, even sprint distances. Enjoy the race and give your best. Don’t think about always winning because that’s where everything begins. Many thanks to Mayor Motalib Ama Moy, brother Ulwan Dimaporo, baby boss Aminah D, mother Meme Imelda, Mayor Bullet, Governor Nanay Nene Jalosjos, and Coach Annie for providing the necessary programs and support,” Alcala said.

Alcala’s team, Tri SND Barracuda, maintained its reputation as one of the best triathlon teams, having consistently held the title since 2019. Their continued success reflects their unwavering commitment to excellence in the sport.
