SHARIFF AGUAK, Maguindanao del Sur (December 15) — A joint police and military operation in Datu Abdullah Sangki that resulted in the death of a suspected Dawlah Islamiya (DI) member highlights ongoing efforts to keep communities in Maguindanao del Sur safe, security officials said.
The suspect, Norodin Andig, was killed on Sunday after allegedly resisting arrest while authorities were serving warrants for multiple murder and attempted murder. Military officials said Andig opened fire on law enforcers, triggering a brief firefight.
Authorities linked Andig to several violent incidents in Rajah Buayan, including the June 10, 2025 killing of Sapakan Central Elementary School principal Alamansa Ambiton, as well as the deaths of four other individuals in 2024 and earlier this year.

Security officials said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to remove individuals involved in targeted killings and prevent further violence in civilian areas.
While large-scale attacks linked to extremist groups have declined in recent years, authorities note that small, fragmented cells remain active, often involved in isolated shootings, intimidation, and criminal activity.
“These are not large battles, but incidents that directly affect daily life — schools, villages, and families,” a security official said, explaining why focused operations continue to be carried out.
Who Dawlah Islamiya is — and what remains
Dawlah Islamiya is a loose network of extremist groups in Mindanao that previously pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. According to the military, years of joint police and military operations have significantly weakened the group, limiting its ability to carry out coordinated attacks.
However, remnant members and sympathizers are believed to be hiding in remote or familiar areas, relying on anonymity and local terrain rather than numbers or firepower.
Authorities say neutralizing these remnants is key to preventing violence from resurfacing and to protecting schools, markets, and residential areas.

Military officials emphasized that the success of the operation was aided by information from civilians, underscoring the importance of community cooperation.
Maj. Gen. Jose Vladimir R. Cagara, commander of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, commended both the operating units and residents who supported the effort.
Security forces encouraged residents to report suspicious activity through proper channels and assured the public that operations are conducted with the aim of minimizing disruption to communities.
